Sara Delaney - The Brit Bloggers crash New York Fashion Week

 alt

Even Amber Rose looked sullen in the front row of the Christian Siriano show on Day 2 at Mercedes-Benz Fashion week and she had a seat!. Kanye's gal was front and centre as the models strutted their stuff at the show where we found that 2 invites actually means 1 in the fabulous world of fashion.

An early entrance by my good self meant I bagged the 'standing' ticket and managed to weadle my way down to a 4th row seat through sheer charm and blagging power. Less luck for my trusty co-hort and blogging babe Welsh Alien in NY, who was left swimming in the sea of sadness that is the free bar at the Tents.

With her usual bravado and stiff upper lip she managed to fall into the company of some charming chaps who are in New York from LA to develop their burgeoning clothing line Anjgiles. Cheering her up with their banter it was off to the Waldorf Astoria to take a peek at the Edwing D'angelo show - until that is we realized our tactical error.

Instead of sticking at the Tents where we could have spotted the likes of Naomi Campbell and her chums at the Fashion for Relief Haiti show, we stumbled into a scary world of 'wannabe' fashion. The once fabulous Waldorf was playing host to a 'couture show' - more like 'comedy show'.... think Camden market meets Singapore stall trader. The place was packed with tables of bizarre tat for sale with a ballroom area for so called fashion shows. Luckily we realized our error within minutes, turned on our heels and re-grouped in a cocktail lounge before heading to Chelsea for Antonio Berardi's show.

So what of the clothes ; It felt a bit like I'd spent the day on the High Street.

altChristian Siriano was all ruffles and layered pleats in dark neutrals with the occasional pop of color. His show stopping evening gown of hot pink with an enormous train had the model wibbling on her heels but maybe that was something to do with the sky high Payless heels she was wearing . Overall the looks were wearable if a little dull, by the look on her face I'm not sure Amber Rose will be hurrying to slip into any of the pieces either.

Alexander Berardi was a little too mass market for me - any of the looks could have easily been pulled off the racks at Zara or H and M - certainly not worth the 30 minute line outside in 28f at the end of a long day.

alt

Surprising though it may seem, there is space in the hectic Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion week Fall 2010 schedule for mens clothes as well as oodles of shows for the ladies. The Mik Cire by Eric Kim show (which had us befuddled for a while until we figured out Eric Kim had just put his name backwards for his new label) was a show strictly for the boys. Eric - who was the founder and CEO of fab fashion label Monarchy, has just launched his new menswear label.

alt

Legendary catwalk instructor Miss Jay was in the front row and was showing some keen interest in the uber cool looks that were sashaying down the runway. With an urban military vibe that oozed downtown boy meets Eastern european checkpoint guard, this may not be a look I could get my husband to pull off, but I'm looking forward to seeing all those fashion savvy gents in the audience embracing it.

Coolest look of the show? has to go to Eric Kim taking a bow with his cute son.... bless!

Best British Meet Ups in New York City

Big Apple Brits - British Expats NYC

Wondering where to find the Best British meet-ups in New York, New York, a city that never sleeps? In those copious waking hours, there seems to be a never-ending series of places to go, things to do, and people to meet. Having never stepped foot in this insomnia ridden metropolis before now, you might be asking yourself, where does one begin this behemoth task of breaking down the barriers? And more importantly, where does someone like ME begin? As an ex-pat, or perhaps an Anglophile in American's clothing, it can be positively overwhelming visiting or moving to the Big Apple. While the city offers so much in the way of culture, food, and nightlife, deciphering the city's endless options is exhausting. So make way and allow New York's numerous British ex pat meet-up communities to step in and offer an inviting and warm welcome.

Currently containing over 1,500 members across Manhattan and neighboring boroughs, the various British Meet-up groups across the city have created an expansive network of places to go, things to do, and most importantly people to meet; people just like you. Come and enjoy a drink at many of the groups' casual, as well as sophisticated, event nights out. As British meet-ups go, convening at the pub is one of the most time-honored traditions. The venues vary from traditional English/Irish fare such as St. Dymphna's in the East Village, to more Americanized British watering holes such as the Telephone Bar on 2nd Avenue. As is part of the experience of discovering familiar, yet disparate pubs around town, the venues chosen by the best British Meet-Up groups in New York City, always have one thing in common; the warmth and comfort of a pub full of great beer and scrumptious pub food.

In the spirit of one of the greatest examples of pub food, relax and take pleasure in a traditional roast dinner in the Big Apple, with Yorkshire pudding that tastes as delectable as it did back home. The tradition of a Sunday roast dinner has carefully made its way across the Atlantic, to the delight of Ex Pats all over the city. This hasn't gone unnoticed by British Meet-Up groups, as many of them have started organizing a Sunday roast at least once a month. Once again the venues for these savory meals of roast beef, roast potatoes, and all the lashings of gravy one could ever want are handpicked. Two of the most popular are the newly established Clerkenwell on the Lower East Side, as well as The Black Horse Pub in Brooklyn. Both serve up delectable versions of the traditional roast, while the Clerkenwell also provides a warm atmosphere, complete with toasty fireplace and casual board games.

While drinking and eating are a great way to get out, see the city, and enjoy new company amongst other ex-pats and Anglophiles, cultural events are also a big part of the British Meet-Up. Different meet-up communities offer varying ways of enjoying British culture, which includes, but is not limited to exclusive engagements of British made films, British sports events both international and domestic, and an assortment of evenings and afternoons filled with the viewing and reading of classic and modern British books, theatre, and comedy. Just this past year, some of the best British Meet-Ups in New York City offered exclusive tickets and giveaways to top UK imports, including In The Loop, Sherlock Holmes, and The Young Victoria. Savvy New Yorkers, native as well as transplanted, are very familiar with British TV shows, which have made quite the resurgence across the pond in the last few years. Ex Pats will be delighted to find there are events and activities centered on these imported gems, including an Eastenders anniversary screening as well as comedy nights that include new and old British TV comedies.

Another mainstay of British culture is sport, highlighted most predominantly in the three largest sports in the UK, football (the kind where you use your feet), rugby, and cricket. Because of football's international appeal, a number of pubs across New York have sprung up to showcase the world's greatest game on a daily basis. From the English Premier League, to international competitions including the Champions League and World Cup, Ex Pats are never far from a match. There are even a number of locations that host supporters clubs for the biggest teams in England. For instance, The Liverpool Supporters Club is at a small, but cozy bar in the East Village, aptly named The 11th Street Bar after its location. While just a few blocks away, the world famous Nevada Smiths plays host to numerous supporters clubs including Manchester United, Chelsea, and Arsenal. Although rugby and cricket aren't as readily available as football, British Meet-ups make the effort to gather at various locations around the city that showcase big international tournaments for Six Nations Rugby and cricket test matches. Rest assured if England, Wales, Scotland, or Ireland are playing, British Meet-ups will make sure you have an entertaining place to view the game, along with first class company to share it with.

For all the music lovers across New York, British Meet-ups organize a diverse smattering of live bands and DJ's, descending upon New York from within the city and beyond its borders across the globe. The UK is famous for its music, especially its innovations in electronica. Luckily for ex pats and music loving Anglophiles, the Big Apple plays host to a number of venues for bands and DJ's. One example is the emergence of the British Meet-Up DJ night the third Friday of every month. Typically hosted at a small, but comfortable bar, most notably The Stone Creek Lounge on 27th street, these nights include fantastic house music and an atmosphere that is loungy and laidback. Most importantly, wherever the music nights are hosted, British Meet-Ups always look for locals that are upscale, while also being affordable. For anyone that has spent a night out in Manhattan, British or otherwise, they understand the cost of enjoyment can often be a deterring factor for where to go.The best British Meet-ups in New York City make a point to always look for places that don't break the bank for it's loyal members.

With British Meet-Up communities as vast, but inclusive as those in the Big Apple, however varied your background, occupation, and age, rest assured you will find a home away from home while in one of the greatest cities in the world. Ex-Pat Meet-Up groups thrive on creating an environment with the genuineness of UK culture right in the heart of New York City. Mix, mingle, dance, drink, and most importantly, enjoy the city's eternal sleepless nights with people you will hereafter know as your mates, the community of British Meet-Ups in New York City.

Vanity Fair Eastenders Party Big Apple Brits

Article in Vanity Fair by James Walcott on Big Apple Brits-Eastenders 25th Anniversary Party in New York City.

Gritty Brits and Britty Grits by James Walcott - Vanity Fair

Dot. Sharon. Lofty. Arfur. Pauline. Den & Angie. Grant and Phil. Pat and Frank.

If these names stir your wind chimes, then you must be a fan of EastEnders, the gritty, spotty-faced British soap opera where everyone's got something dodgy going on and the characters spit dialogue such as, "He needs to sort himself out" and "He needs sorting out, that one does" and "You need to sort yourself out, before somebody does it for you."

"Personally," writes Michael Bywater in a very entertaining essay on The Meaning of EastEnders, I'd give it top marks just for introducing a new and universally appropriate greeting whenever one resident opens the front door to another: 'What YOU want?'"

In honor of the show's 25th anniversary (my, how time flaps like a sooty bird), there's a Big Apple Brits party this Saturday the 13th at the Grisly Pear on Macdougald Street that begins at 5 pm and will continue until everybody is properly sorted out. For all the details, click this link.

The anniversary party also serves as the book launch for Larry Jaffee's Albert Square & Me: The Actors of EastEnders, a collection of interviews with cast members past and present. The publisher of Walford Gazette, Jaffee is the best friend on this side of the Atlantic that EastEnders has ever had, a tireless evangelist for the show fighting for its availability on public television and cable despite setback after setback. (I've never forgiven BBC America for dumping new episodes of EastEnders for a nonstop rotation of antiques and makeover programs.) Albert Square & Me is also available on Amazon.

Did I ever tell about the time I attended a luncheon for June Brown, the actress who plays Dot? Turns out she had a small role in Straw Dogs that ended up on the cutting-room floor. Now as fascinated as I was to hear about EastEnders backstage baseball, getting the inside dope on Sam Peckinpah's sorting everybody out on the set of Straw Dogs--well, to me that's the stuff of "movie magic." Because of that I probably monopolized June Brown at that long-ago luncheon, but who cares, the restaurant where we met is now a bank and the colors of memory have run and mingled and faded. Time's winged chariot is stuck in a snowbank and so I must take the subway instead down to Soho House, where I have a lunch date.

Rachel Van DeVoordes Blog on Big Apple Brits

I was on holiday in Florida last week, so I missed the much publicized international broadcast of Hope for Haiti Telethon. This concert, spearheaded by George Clooney and Wyclef Jean, shattered previous charity broadcasts raising a whopping 57 million dollars in one evening. The digital album of the performances debuted at number 1 on the Billboard charts. I really enjoyed this album- the song choices are poignant and truly capture the somber situation in Haiti. It’s refreshing to hear Beyonce strip down her song Halo, singing over just a single piano accompaniment. Taylor Swift covers one of my favorite songs by Better Than Ezra in her impressive rendition of Breathless (no wonder that girl won a Grammy!) The combination of Sheryl Crow, Kid Rock and Keith Urban works for Lean on Me, adding their southern rock flavor. Madonna’s voice is weak in the beginning of Like a Prayer, but the choir gives her the boost she needed to pull out the performance. The best performance on this album is the chilling version of Jeff Buckley’s Hallelujah performed Justin Timberlake and up-and-coming singer/songwriter Matt Morris. It was surprising to see Bono step out of the limelight on Rihanna and Jay-Z’s Stranded (Haiti Mon Amour). I would have predicted that he would have performed an acoustic version of One, but opted for glorified backup singer instead. Wyclef ends the album on a much-needed upbeat track with Rivers of Babylon/Yele medley.

Here are some other ways you can contribute to the relief efforts in Haiti by the simple act of downloading music:

Simon Cowell is in the process of gathering top recording artists to record the single “Everybody Hurts”. Artists on board with the project include Kylie Minogue, Rod Stewart, Mika, Michael Buble, Robbie Williams, Take That, Leona Lewis, Susan Boyle, and James Morrison. The single will be available for download on February 7th. Proceeds will go to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC).

Paste Magazine has compiled 250 (many previously unreleased) songs from artists such as Of Montreal, Ludacris, She and Him available for download for anyone who donates to Haiti through their website: http://www.pastemagazine.com/songsforhaitiMoney donated through the Paste website will be split between three charities – Doctors without Borders, Red Cross and Wyclef’s Yele Charity.

If you donate $15 to Medecins Sans Frontieres/Doctors Without Borders or Oxfam, Chicago rockers Wilco will reward their fans with free downloads of two live concerts for download off their website. http://www.wilcoworld.net/causes/index.php

Linkin Park frontman Mike Shinoda has created the Download to Donate For Haiti project. Stars like Peter Gabriel, Hoobastank, Alanis Morisette, Enrique Iglesias , Slash, Dave Matthews Band and All-American Rejects have all contributed tracks to this website. http://www.musicforrelief.org

Anyone interested in owning Muse’s drumkit? How about the Artic Monkeys’ Alex Turner’s Guitar? Still need VIP tickets to Glastonbury? Check out the Oxfam Ebay auction: http://stores.shop.ebay.co.uk/Oxfam-Shop For the mere price of 5200 quid (at press time), I can even have Damon Albarn write me a song! Happy bidding! (If anyone needs a date to Glastonbury, I'm available by the way...)

I really love it that so many celebrities have come together so quickly after this tragedy to raise these funds. Kudos to George Clooney MTV, and Wyclef Jean for creating a telecast to raise a staggering $57 million dollars. I’m sure we’ll be seeing many more charity performances and albums in the weeks to come. And we all know that Haiti will continue to need this aid for years to come.

Brian Fallon and Dave Hause

A few months ago, thanks to Pandora, I discovered the music of The Gaslight Anthem. Imagine Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty singing in a punk rock band, mixed with a litte blues and soul. The members of The Gaslight Anthem admit to being heavily influenced by Bruce and have even been joined onstage at Glastonbury by The Boss himself. Although their first albumSink or Swim was released in 2008 to decent critical acclaim, their sophomore release The '59 Sound has been much more commercially and critically successful. I prefer The '59 Sound and think it's one of the few albums you can listen to in full without wanting to skip a single track. Before going to this show, my friends shared stories about the massive moshpit and crowd surfing at last year's show. I was curious to see if frontman Brian Fallon could effectively perform these same songs and keep his fans' attention with just an acoustic guitar.

During the sold out performance at The Bowery Ballroom on January 15th, I felt like I had gathered in Brian's basement (along with 500 of his closest friends) for some stories about songwriting and one massive sing-a-long. At times, the voices in the crowd almost overpowered Brian's voice. His setlist was half The Gaslight Anthem songs and half cover songs. Brian made sure to play all the fan favorites from The '59 Sound including Great Expectations, Old White Lincoln and Miles Davis and The Cool. My favorite moment of the evening occurred during Here's Looking At You Kid - a song which he describes all of his past loves. After the verse which describes Anna who lives on Seventh Avenue in Brooklyn, the crowd (presumably those from Brooklyn) erupted in screams. At that moment, Brian stopped singing the song and told us more details about Anna, saying that she still works at the Co-Op in the Slope. Then he just picked up where left off in the song. Between songs throughout the set, he sprinkled in funny stories about touring, songwriting and living in New Jersey. After what felt like only ten minutes (but had actually been ninety minutes), his support act Dave Hause joined him onstage for an encore made up entirely of cover songs. From a chilling performance of Tegan and Sara's Call It Off to Johnny Cash's Ring of Fire to a grittier interpretation of Kelly Clarkson's I Do Not Hook Up, Brian's versatility was amazing. To my surprise, a man armed with an acoustic guitar and witty charm can satisfy an audience of punk fans.

Rugby - 6 Nations Coverage in New York blog Heds from arugbylife.com

2010 Six Nations TV coverage in New York City USA by Heds at arugbylife.com blog on Big Apple Brits

altIt's that time of year again and I'm exited to see what this years  Six Nations has in store. But where to watch the games?

Well anyone familiar with the watching rugby stateside, its usually involves getting up at the crack of dawn, raid the local ATM, and head to the local pub to fork over a $20 cover charge. Even with all the upheaval at Setanta, that won't be change much this month. Through February 28th Setanta will be broadcasting matches live on their Premium channel (accessible via the local bars or on Per Per View) and delayed on the regular channel. However, there is an added bonus this year in that  BBC America has also decided to air a selection of games also. So what are your options?

Whatever happens with Setanta, you are guaranteed to see following 9 games before the potentially go off the air:

Sat 6th Feb - Ireland v Italy
Sat 6th Feb - England v Wales
Sun 7th Feb - Scotland v France
Sat 13th Feb - Wales v Scotland
Sat 13th Feb - France v Ireland
Sun 14th Feb - Italy v England
Fri 26th Feb - Wales v France
Sat 27th Feb - Italy v Scotland
Sat 27th Feb - England v Ireland

There is no news yet from  Fox (who bought them) if they plan to broadcast the other 6 games. Most pubs locally are listing all 15 games and state they are showing them via Setanta, so the dreaded cover charge still applies.

For those lucky enough to get BBC America, you'll get the following 5 matches:

Sat 6th Feb - Wales v England
Sat 13th Feb - Ireland v France
Sat 27th Feb - Ireland v England
Sat 13th Mar - Wales v Ireland
Sat 20th Mar - England v France

Its not clear yet why they are't showing all of them, but we'll learn more about that soon enough. As BBC America is more accessible, I suspect we might start to see more bars showing games.

Where will I be? I usually frequent my local in  Hoboken Mulligans or head across the Hudson to  the Red Lion. Both great rugby pubs and will be filled with local teams and supporters.  BAB will be of course hosting numerious events also, so remember to check out the events page for more details. Unfortunately, I'm sick as a dog, so I am going to ride it out from home by following the first game online and then settle in to watch Wales v England on BBC America.

I have reached out to a few bars for more information about games shown in March and I'll post an update on my blog as soon as I hear back.
